Sitting at my new writing desk, which now that the weather is warm, is a beat as hell old plastic patio table and chair that have been residing uselessly on my porch for the past god knows how long, worn by rain and the dirt of winter still lingers on it’s weathered surfaces.
Here, I can kick my shoes off, take a swig from my nice tall bottle of cold Fat Tire Amber Ale and smoke cigarettes freely in the cooling summer night.
The night sky is the most amazing shade of backlit deep cerulean blue, the whole world is in high definition as the shadow puppet trees sway blackly against the sky and the stars start to poke holes in the sky.
This is my first summer truly alone. My own apartment, in the middle of beautiful Cherry District Santa Rosa.
Summer brings memories of my closest friends of past and present here in Santa Rosa. Every night when I stride past the church on the corner, I think of sticky humid nights on the bench with JB, and the way he talks. With hands to emphasize long sentences and a quick jab of humor in the middle of a long eloquent statement.
I keep expecting Bill The Cat to wander by and knock on my door, burdoned down with backpack, silver hair shining in the light on the patio, eyebrows raised in question and palm toward the sky as if to say “Mind if I come in?”. Sarcasm and clever single-liners galore between puffs on a camel wide.
Or LaReina with her flashing red hair and pale feline-mean features gliding up the drive on her bicycle and calling up to me on the balcony, ready to bring up Gin & Tonic from downstairs and discuss at length the ideas of personal growth & psychology. Chic and put together, always knocking before walking freely into my apartment, breezing past to spritz the Clinique fragrance I keep in my bathroom almost solely for her use.
But tonight I am left to myself, the sounds of Beirut floating away on the breeze from small speakers, to clatter and click away at a keyboard or drink beer on the patio and amuse my own mind.
I am happily single. It is less of an appreciation of the independence and more of a sigh of relief over not dealing with some other person’s psychodrama or bending over backwards to please another person. I found myself unknowingly walking into a series of non-serious relationships only to find later that I was the unknown second girlfriend to another unsuspecting female. I can’t do that, I really just can’t be that giving. I require getting something back other than a few hours of entertaining conversation or a loan from a boy’s bookshelf or music collection.
I am broke, but happy. I am working in a better shop, where I can really just do for the most part whatever it is I want. I can get my hair colored for free, which most definitely appeals to me. There is more to life than an endless wardrobe and decadent meals, although the idea of not struggling to make ends meet does appeal. I have been living in poverty long enough to be used to the stress and the smiles are more common than the tears.
I have decorated my front room of my tiny downtown apartment to resemble as closely on my shoestring budget as I can manage, a discount bohemian circus. Colored lights and odd home-made paintings litter the walls, and strange knick-knacks clutter the shelves among books and music. My bedroom still resembles the gothic lair it always has, with multiple black canopies over my bed and candles on most surfaces among my new creepy victorian porcelain doll collection. Dried roses still hang from the ceiling.
Anyway, I am off to contemplate the depressing state of current affordable fashion and attempt to assemble a future wardrobe that will resemble as closely the inside of my eccentric mind as possible. Off I go!

Freedom, sweet freedom! Freedom to move about the country, take trips anywhere you can afford to go, do the things you want to do for yourself without having to include a second into the equation. Change jobs, or cut all of your hair off. Roll the windows down in the car, turn the music up and croon along like the tone deaf musical genius you clearly are– without a complaint.
Independent social identity and time to really spend with your friends. You don’t have to censor yourself or your embarrassingly awkward friends or worry if your significant other is bothered by your incredibly attractive friend of the opposite sex.
Time is money, and money is time, and baby you have plenty more of both! I have a terrible habit I have recently broken myself of, where I tend to financially support my significant other. No more! And now I really don’t have to worry.
All that really embarrassingly hideous yet comfortable or shape-enhancing underwear you have? Free to wear it as much as you like and rock on feeling like your true hottie self without having to strip down privately in the bathroom or whatever.
Get your hair done, get your nails done, go on the second shopping trip this week. There is nobody judging your purchasing anymore, and you can truly enjoy the reformation of your gloriously growing new fashion identity.
Nobody but your own sweet self, your job, or your family taking up all that precious space in your brain. Ugly fights, downhill moments that take up everything in your head and turn every romantic song on the radio into the last thing you want to hear… well, that is gone. You don’t have to be preoccupied by what he or she is doing at this moment, or feel like you want to call them every lunch and fifteen minute break you get at work.
Girls. Night. Out. ‘Nuff said, riight?
You are not obligated to be a part of their annoying hobby, watch their favorite TV show that you hate or sit through your least favorite genre of movie.
Nobody hogging all the good shit you buy at the grocery store, or borrowing your toothbrush or razor.
Dancing naked around your own apartment, eating take out, and staying up as late as you want.

I find some of the most bizarre things via StumbleUpon, and so instead of plaguing my poor Facebook friends with link after link, I will just throw them up here.

Modern Living/Neurotica series WHAT THE FUCK?! First thought was that this is utterly bizarre, but now I have decided it is entirely brilliant. Click and move your cursor and see what happens. Really.

I have been also thinking a lot about The Triangular Theory of Love a lot. I don’t know how much stock I would put in this theory, but it is food for thought.

solitude. the twenty somethings of rosa are drifting from noisy brew pubs to hole in the wall windowless joints where the alcohol is cheap and flows steady. i am on the balcony portch of my hideaway humble happy hovel watching the sea breeze brush coastal fog past the moons halop like smoke while whisps of incense and muted tones of tom waits gravelly groans and wails drift out onto the early breeze into night through open door.
secondhand kitchen table oce deposited on my doorstep has become portch table ,and is composed of faux wood mystery material. chairs on metal bases with battered wicker backs. my plain black workclothes well worn & comfortable just enough with sweater to beat the chill. tomorrow will bring an ugly heat that will bear down on the city like a heavy hand that pushes us all indoors to coled interiors of offices & shops.
herbal suppliment tea scours my stomach & my ears pop with every gulp- the lingering effects of an illness that never quite left but makes a quiet and prolonged attempt at departure at the urging of the host.
my mess my apartment my humble and disheveled mental state.
I long to travel & leave less & less & for sane domestcity more, work more.
travel will happen like a cat, unexpected in its appearance but gladly rubbing at your ankles.
here, i am fine. a charcoal portrait of bukowski leans against a patsy cline record & an original art piece on canvas by yours truly. candles mingle on shelves with long empty wine staned glasses and seashells, ashes of incense. vintage handpainted parasol popped open conceals a mess in the corner and books are piled on the floor & shelf going all directions to fit to overflow.
the breeze rustles the curtains and the loose end of a piece of art tacked haphazardly to a wall. eventually i will quiet the music and plod off to bed to read & fall asleep book in hand.

I also will definitely be looking at Gala’s Fifty Things Every Girl Should Do In Her Lifetime: Part One and eventually Part Two for the next couple of weeks and reassess a lot of my goals that are already on that list, and consider a few that are not. I do feel really accomplished having read that, though. Once upon a time I was kicked out of the military, and upon realizing that I was going home with a lot of new experiences, I made a lot lot LOT of lists. Now I want to go find them and dig them out! Do you have a list?!

Rabbit Write talks about her love affair with journaling. While the voice of her words is different the perspective holds true to my own on jotting down one’s thoughts, and I generally tend to have about three online journals and three or four paper ones at any given moment.

Stoopidgerl’s Wreck This Journal set on Flickr is awesome. I had a Wreck This Journal also, and had attempted to play with it with some friends. It had the marks of many friends and eventually ripped in half, smells like coffee and sandalwood and has a few burnt pages.

Home Sweet Hovel

Holy sweet jesus! I started around 11:00 PM last night reorganizing my cozy one bedroom apartment, starting with the closets. Finding myself both completely frustrated by the mess and motivated by how much I had just done, then moved to boxes that had been randomly sitting around the front room, and smaller scattered cluttered places before beginning to plough through the clothing pile in the bedroom.

Geminis are not organized and clean.

My darling accomplice and I both being Geminis can tend to revel insome amount of mess and clutter, and even a Gemininian organizational system can look chaotic or colorful or downright creative (My apartment will be anything but spartan and bare when I am done).

I once had a Cancer friend that had this method of cleaning that involved putting things into drawers and piling things into corners in neat stacks. She lost a cordless phone this way.

My mentor and her live in boyfriend are both Virgos, and their house IS spartan and bare. They regularly scrub most surfaces with pinesol, and it is rumored that the books on the shelves are in plastic bags.

What is your style of cleaning?

Anyway, I finally lost the energy to keep going. Tomorrow I grab a shovel and get to work on the petrified clothing that has melded to the carpet. Just kidding! I rotate piles for freshness and to occasionally locate a shoe.

‡ Eating super fresh & rich foods. Brie & nectarines, strawberries, moist mozzerella, sourdough toast & home made organic plum jam!

‡ Lavendar ultra fine point sharpies

‡ Urban Decay eyeshadow smeared on with fingers. Pearlescent & glittered! Some of my favorite shades are Asphyxia, Flash, Grifter and Grind.

‡ New lingerie! I need some! I want some! In turqoises, blues and violets!

‡ Heart punctuation. I know I’m not twelve but really no need to be a negative nancy about it!

‡ Going to the coast/beach. California ovean water is frigid as all f#%@ but I don’t even care, it is part of the charm!

‡ Plans to mix monkey wrenches in juice bottles & go read short stories in the park on a blanket. My picks for good beach blanket reading are Allen Ginsberg’s Howl, Anaïs Nin’s Delta Of Venus, or any of Kerouac’s poetry colections.

‡ Exploring town with a camera & an eye for beauty in the small things.

‡ This blog!!! I am turning my love/hate relationship with it into a love/love one! Starting now!!

enticing new world

The pages of the calendar seem to flutter past rapidly like a montage in a black and white classic film. Days go by so fast, with work being more and more a high priority, taking more and more of my time and energy. I walk in and start cutting hair and find that all my previous problems seem to have dissipated, and the art form I’ve been dedicating my days to mostly is consuming my energy, and boosting my positivity to maximum capacity.

As my mentor who trained me to fine tune my art has said, if you need anything, it will find you here. An electrician, a plumber, some tummy tightening gym equipment, she’s found everything she’s needed in her clientele that ranges from the every day joe construction worker to the former police chief of San Francisco.

My wandering ways have come to a near grinding halt with the posession of my fine new apartment in the heart of historical and beautiful Cherry District downtown. My spacious one bedroom has been filled with decorations and candles, posters and cheerful lights, a coffee maker that is perfectly cute shiny and black, and a luxuriously comfortable black canopy bed.

Where from here, I ask myself, will I go? I do not know.

With the new president in office, I can only be one of the cheerful many, with hope in their hearts and the will to make it through the ugly times ahead. The changing attitude of the nation is contagious, I can only let it take hold of me and be whisked forward into the future with a smile and a notion that good times are coming.
